"It'sa great honor and a privilege to be so honored and I want to first thank President Jacques Chirac for awarding me this prestigious award, but I also think with a lot of respect for the thousands of men and women who participated in the construction of exceptional ship that is the Queen Mary 2, "said Micky Arison. --------- Micky Arison, chairman of Carnival Corp., the world leader in the cruise Unusually for a French media, Micky Arison has agreed to an interview at Sea and Marine. At the head of an empire of 82 ships and 11.8 billion in sales, the chairman of Carnival Corporation controls the group created in 1972 by his father. Ted Arison, a founder of Norwegian Cruise Line in 1966, decided to start his own company, the TSS Mardi Gras. Since then the fleet has grown steadily and Carnival acquired over the years, many weapons. The group now owns, in addition to Carnival Cruise Line, Costa Cruises, Princess, P & O, Cunard, Holland America, AIDA and The Yachts of Seabourn. He also announced in late 2006, the resumption of Spanish tour operator Iberojet. In all, the group, valued at some 23.5 billion euros, employs 70,000 people, including 60,000 seafarers. His plan is colossal, with 19 vessels in controls, whose Costa Serena, Emerald Princess AIDAdiva which will be delivered shortly. ---------- Sea and Navy: The Carnival Freedom is the culmination of 30 years of cruising and Fun Ships. What were the changes and how the ship responds to the expectations of passengers? Micky Arison: In fact, Carnival Cruise Line is a product that is constantly evolving. We have made improvements and tried to do things a little differently but the basic concept, with a wide range of activities, types of dining and entertainment, is common to all vessels. The Freedom, like its predecessors, makes best use of its large size to offer more dining options, entertainment and choice for passengers. So there is no revolution with this ship from its elders. It is an evolution of proven concepts, while adapting to customer requests and what they need. And what customers expect today from a cruise ship, especially on a Carnival ship? I think they are looking first and foremost a quality environment, a ship very clean, good service, good food and good entertainment, all of which are the basis of a successful holiday. What often makes the difference with other modes of travel, it is the service and on board, the staff is very attentive vis-à-vis passengers. The cruise market continues to grow. Do you think it will still take a long time for you and what are the potentials for development? The rate of penetration of the cruise industry over other types of holidays is still very low in many countries. This is the case in France where it grows mostly through Costa, one of the companies of Carnival, which is the market leader. The Queen Mary 2 has also been built in France but each year the growth rate of the cruise in France is only half that of the United States and other European countries. The potential is enormous and we continue to work very hard to develop Costa, but AIDA Cruises in Germany and P & O UK. We believe that growth opportunities are very important, especially in France. Let's talk a little bit of France. For several years, you build most of your ships in Italy, except, as you said, the QM2 Cunard your subsidiary. Is what you are, somehow, married with Fincantieri or is it that in years to come, you could order ships elsewhere and why not go back to Saint-Nazaire? We have very good relations with the group Aker Yards and yards of Saint-Nazaire. We have already built at Aker, Finland, 14 ships and we continue to talk together. They are now busy with some companies, including MSC. However, we continue to discuss, as with Meyer Werft in Germany and Fincantieri in Italy. You never know, I would not be surprised that in the future we can build with Aker. Ships are getting bigger. RCCL has commissioned last year including the Genesis, a giant of 220,000 tons. Yourself you had mentioned a few years ago the construction of a huge ocean liner, the Pinnacle project. What do you think now of these giants? Does the Genesis is not a ship too big? I'm not sure the market is ready for this kind of boat, on which the operational aspect is crucial. Today we have in any case no plans to build a ship larger than the Queen Mary 2. We are comfortable with the size and capacity of vessels from 3000 to 3500 passengers and we do not plan to ship the genre of Genesis. For us, this boat is too big. We believe in certain products and what we build is going very well. I am certain that Royal Caribbean will do an excellent job on the Genesis, but this type of boat, it's not for us. On the European market. You deployed the Carnival Liberty in the Mediterranean last year and Carnival Freedom this season. Is this opens the way for development of your fleet in the Mediterranean, to propose a new route to the Americans who are accustomed to such vessels in the Caribbean? Carnival Freedom is already operated in the Mediterranean until October which is the longest deployment of a ship of our fleet in Europe. We will, in June 2008, another shipment, the Carnival Splendour, but we have not yet made a final decision on where the vessel will be operated, or if he would cross the Atlantic in Europe. However, we are still very present in Europe through our subsidiaries, which continue to grow in a very favorable market. You recently announced a joint venture with Spanish group Iberojet. What is your strategy through this merger? We are already the leader in Spain via Costa, excluding tour operator Pullmantur and Iberojet. We believe that growth can be very important in the mass market in Spain. The alliance with Iberojet is to lead this development. Once the joint venture is operational, we will develop quickly Iberojet fleet. Once the transaction is completed and the authorities have given their approval, you will see very quickly our expansion plan.
