Sorry for my poor english translation.

The etymology of the word philanthropy derives its roots from Greek philos φ?λος (or edges), and ?νθρωπος, anthropos, which are translated respectively as 'love' (or 'lover', 'friend') and 'anthropos' (or 'human being'), so that philanthropy means "love of mankind." Its antonym is misanthropy.

In general, philanthropy means love of mankind and all that humanity is concerned, particularly its positive and constructive manner, expressed in helping others without necessarily requiring an exchange or interest in an answer .

Philanthropic efforts are made by individuals or groups of individuals organized.

Donations to humanitarian organizations, individuals, communities, or working to help others, directly or through non-governmental organizations non-profit, as is volunteer work to support institutions with the specific purpose of helping living and improve their lives, are considered philanthropic acts, if not driven by interest.

History

The term was created by Flavius Claudius Julianus (331/332 - 26 June 363), who was Roman emperor from 361 until his death.

One of the primary tasks of Julian as emperor, was to restore paganism as the religion of the Romans, in this attempt to imitate the Christian church in all its institutions and even in his doctrine, as in this case, and coined the term " philanthropy "to replace the Christian charity, which was one of the virtues of the new religion and had never been part of paganism as a religion in Rome or Athens.
