India: HERO HONDA bought out their joint venture for 853 million USD

India's Hero Group announced on Tuesday to buy $ 853 million from 26% owned by Honda in their Japanese joint venture Hero Honda Motors, the largest manufacturer of two-wheelers in India, an amount far below expectations market.

Hero Honda Motors had already announced in December, the next departure of Honda from its capital and the end of 26 years of collaboration. But the amount of the transaction were not disclosed.

Hero Group announced it would buy out Honda for 38.42 billion rupees (853 million dollars) to around 22 March. This price is Rs 739.97 per share, less than half the current price.

Hero did not explain why he got the Honda reduction of the purchase price too high, raising fears the market that the Indian group has pledged, in return, to pay higher royalties to Honda for having the right to continue to use the technology of the Japanese group.

"The price offered by Hero Group is well below market expectations," commented an analyst from a brokerage firm in Bombay, under cover of anonymity. "Given that Honda withdrew at low prices, the fear is that they require much higher royalties."

For its part, Hero has always maintained that the royalties paid to Honda for the existing models would not increase.

Relations deteriorated between the two partners after Japan's decision to enter the Indian market for motorbikes through its fully owned subsidiary, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (TSN).

Once the effective dissolution of the joint venture, Honda should focus on the development of this subsidiary in a favorable environment thanks to rising incomes of the 300 million Indian middle class.

For its part, Hero Group, which controls 44% of the Indian market, will sell more motorcycles and scooters. He was so far limited to the neighboring countries of India because of Honda's global presence.
