Cathedral of the Holy Name of Brisbane

Cathedral of the Holy Name of Brisbane (in English: Holy Name Cathedral) is a project devised by Archbishop James Duhig Brisbane in the early 1920s. In the spirit of its designer, he was founding a new cathedral surpassing its dimensions other churches in the city, beginning with St. Stephen's Cathedral, while still unfinished.
The site chosen by the diocesan authorities, formerly known as Duncan's Hill, since 1860 was the property of the Catholic Church. Located at the intersection of Ann Street, Gotha Street and Gipps Street, in the district of Fortitude Valley, it is in the eyes of the Archbishop an ideal site.

The prelate's dream turns into a court battle with the architects a few years later, while the construction of the new cathedral was finally abandoned. Religious services are celebrated in the crypt for a few years before the episcopate decides to sell the land and its buildings to a developer in 1985, the company FA Pidgeon & Son Pty. Ltd. Having sought permission in 1991, it carries out the destruction of the crypt to build instead a commercial and residential complex.
The latter, called "Cathedral Place" was inaugurated April 30, 1999 by Mayor of Brisbane, Jim Soorley4.

Its capital is Brisbane. It is the only Australian state with a unicameral parliament.

The first people to inhabit the area were Australian Aborigines and Torres Strait natives, who arrived there 40 000 and 65 000 years, according to several techniques datation1. A few hundred centuries later, the Queensland became a colony of the British crown which was separated from New South Wales 6 June 1859, a date which is celebrated annually as Queensland Day. The area currently covers the city of Brisbane was originally the Moreton Bay penal colony where convicts were repeat offenders (those who had committed a crime during their period of execution of sentence in New South Wales). The state later encouraged free settlement of people.

Today Queensland's economy is dominated by agriculture, tourism and natural resources.

The population is mainly clustered in the south-east Queensland, which includes the capital Brisbane, Logan City, Ipswich, Toowoomba and the Gold and Sunshine Coasts. Other major regional centers are Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Hervey Bay and Mount Isa. Queensland is often nicknamed the Sunshine State (the "Sunshine State"), because its climate is hot and that much lies in the tropics. The people of Queensland are colloquially known as 'Banana Benders' or 'Canetoads', respectively, because of old banana plantations in the tropics and because of the environmental disaster that occurred when the toad (cane toad) were imported get rid of the beetle which devastated cane sugar cane fields.
