Mounted trot

The trot is mounted very prevalent it is found mainly in France and Belgium. In such event, the jockey sits directly on the horse saddled. There are two ways to mount: the so-called traditional climbs, and climbs before (the jockey sticks closest to the horse's head). The principle of the race is to reach the winning post first, while remaining at a trot. If the horse starts running, he is disqualified. The times achieved mounted trotting are worse than those of trotting. The test-trotting queen is mounted Cornulier Award.

The dish

The principle of flat racing (or galloping) is, at first sight, very simple: from a gallop and cross the winning post first.

The race distances vary from 900 (some races for two years) to 4000 meters (eg Dial competing on the Longchamp racecourse in Paris, but most often between 1600 and 2400 meters, English mile is the historical reference, with its 1609 meters.

The horses are in the starting stalls, that is to say, the boxes in which they return and that open automatically when the start is given.

However, to obtain a competitive race, it is necessary that all competitors can express themselves, even if their potential is less. This is the principle of disability: Before the race, the handicapper gives each horse a certain weight it will have to wear throughout the race.

The weights are distributed according to the results of the horses, and vary between 50 and 62 kg in France (figures and units of weight change by country). Thus, the winning horse in a race will receive an additional burden for the next race. Instead, a horse doing a poor race will remove the weight for the next. The objective is to obtain the closest race possible.

During the race, we must also take into account the importance of the rope. Indeed, horses, following a draw, get a number that designates their departure stall. The No. 1 is found in the cord, the No. 18 all the way to the outside, which means it will travel a greater distance in the turns. It is therefore an important element, which can sometimes cost you the victory.

The flat racing's most famous is the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. There are other very prestigious races in England, Ireland, Germany, Italy, the United States, Japan, Hong Kong and Dubai.

There is a hierarchy of races around the globe. The most prestigious races are classified into Group I (Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, Epsom Derby, Dubai World Cup for example), then there are races Group II, Group III race, then-Listed race, disability, the price series and finally claiming races. Note that in the Americas, we use the same grading system, but under certain conditions the term group may be replaced by grade.

The obstacle

There are three types of jump racing: the hurdles, steeplechase and cross country.

For these races, the principle is the same as flat races: galloping with a certain weight assigned by the handicapper, and cross the winning post first.

However, there are significant differences from the flat. First, the departure is behind elastic, and not in stalls. Then, the track is strewn with obstacles that horses must cross. Finally, the distance is much larger, implying for the horses to have good stamina, the top speed is no longer sufficient.

In the hurdles, the obstacles are relatively modest, this is bush hedges of 1.10 meter. The race distance varies between 3000 and 5000 meters, but most races is run over 3 500 to 3 900 meters.

The steeplechase is the most prestigious discipline of the barrier, the barriers are higher and more complex, including the famous jumping River stands at Auteuil for example. Moreover, the distance is greater, with an average 4 300 to 4 400 meters to go, although some races are longer still (5800 meters).

The steeplechase racing's most prestigious are the Grand Steeplechase de Paris in France, the Nakayama Grand Jump (running with the best) in Japan and the Grand National at Liverpool, the most legendary.

Finally, cross-country event is the obstacle most spectacular natural obstacles many and varied but still impressive (open-ditch, low-cons, cons-up, ditch, river ...) and a very remote important, between 5000 and 7000 more meters (7300 meters for the Loire-Anjou Challenge Award at the Lion d'Angers). So test the more demanding and more dangerous for both horses for the riders.

Types of races

Races to conditions

It is the royal road to start and access the most prestigious races such as the group. Participants must meet several criteria: sex, age, earnings and performance are all conditions for hire his horse. Using these criteria, we determine the weight for gallopers and retreat for walkers.

The réclamers

At the end of the race horses are auctioned through secret ballot. During the race, the horses are equipped with extra weight calculated according to the setting determined by the buyers.

Handicaps

Open only to gallopers have accrued at least thrice. For the balance of chances, we met the horses with a value close to handicap. It is given by the handicapper as performance and quality of the horse. It may change after each race. The weight carried by the horse is proportional to its value and the reference to handicap the race. Unlike races conditions the value of the horse (the weight carried) is more or less subjective.
