Sorry for my poor english translation.

The word art referred to in the broadest sense to mean any activity developed, which is founded on knowledge, practice, perception, imagination and intuition (art of healing art of free speech). In a narrow sense to be named targeted results of human activity that are not clearly defined by functions. Art is a human cultural product, the result of a creative process. The artwork is usually at the end of this process, but since the process of modernity to be myself. Practitioners of the art in the strict sense be called an artist.

Since the Enlightenment, above all, art is meant by the expression of the Fine Arts [1]:

Visual arts with the traditional genres of painting and graphic art, sculpture, architecture and many small forms and, since the 19th Century the decorative arts or Applied Arts said border area for crafts
Music composition and performance of the main divisions into vocal and instrumental music
Literature with the main genres epic, drama, poetry and essays
Performing arts with the main areas of theater, dance and film
Opera as a combination of all the arts: music, performing arts (acting), fine arts (stage design), literature (poetry)

Expressive forms and techniques of art have been growing since the beginning of modernity, with photography in the visual arts. In the performing arts, music and literature can be added today also include expressions of new media such as radio, television and the Internet. The classic division loses at least since the last decades of the 20th Century in search of the complete work of art in importance. Art forms such as the installation or the field of media art no longer know the basic classical division.

Art is a German word. Already in Old High German, it was art (kunsti plural), in Middle High German art (Pl arts). Originally, the art is a verb can Substantivabstraktum with the meaning "that which one controls; knowledge, knowledge, mastery." The phrase "Art comes from ability" is thus etymologically, the word origin, is correct.

The contemporary meaning of the word has evolved in that in addition to the Latin word ars was with "art" was translated into German (Lehnbedeutung), for example, in ars vivendi. Especially since the modern era, the term is increasingly ambiguous, because in addition to old uses of the word (in the sense of "teaching knowledge") are new (within the meaning of the plural arts as a "genre", as "autonomous art", "fine arts") [2].

The concept art was and is therefore used:

In the sense of knowledge, perception, cognition, insight
Since 16 Century art is not only used to describe a knowledge, the term is also synonymous with philosophy, but also uses the (natural) sciences.

In the sense of skill
Was referring to skills within a subject area and the whole of a skill (swordsmanship, horsemanship, culinary arts, healing arts, arithmetic, penmanship, art of living) or activity. Received a negative connotation these arts, if so clever deceptions are meant (thieves arts, beautification arts, black magic, or magic art of seduction). From the semantic field of displacements is also the adjective "artificial".

In the sense of craft
The word craft still puts the craft. Until the 18th Century art was used as a synonym for the exercise of a craft. Has received this instruction in words such as weaving, pottery, architecture. With Kant can finally konstatieren the separation of terms: "In the narrower sense, craft and art clearly recorded, although in close contact, even flowing of both non-missing (see arts and crafts), art is distinguished from the craft, the first is free, the other can also mean wage Art. "

In the spirit of science
Since Leibniz, we know the name of scientific disciplines as a "language arts (Grammatica), rhetoric (Rhetorica), Mass Art (Geometria), proof art (Logica), Sion Art (Ethica), Sehkunst (Optica), Zergliederkunst (Anatomy), Scheid Art (Chymia) and others ". Soon, however, art is distinguished from science. Goethe says: "Art and science are the words that you need so many times and the exact difference is seldom understood, we often used one for the other, and then suggests to other definitions: I think that science could be the knowledge of the general call, the stripped knowledge, art, by contrast, would be science fact to be used. Science would be rational, art and its mechanism, so you could also call it practical science. And finally, science would be because the theorem, the problem of art. "

As opposed to natural
Not least in the wake of the Enlightenment and its new concept of nature art is understood as opposed to natural, as natural instead of artificial. Today one uses the arts as a prefix name for "not natural", etc. faux fur, plastic, artificial flower, artificial eye

In the sense of Fine Arts
Art in today's most commonly used conceptual sense was coined mainly by Winckelmann, Lessing, Herder, Goethe and Schiller. In their writings they describe the human aesthetic creations for the purpose of edification as art, be it in the theater, in literature, in music or the works of "visual artist" to which eventually narrows the concept of growing. Thus, the art also emerged as a prefix for word combinations like art exhibitions, artwork, art auctions etc..

In the sense of machine
From the 18 Century is also developing a line of meaning that art used to refer to a machine or machine-made object (be fire art for fire engine, steam Art for steam engine, water art for fountains and plants for water supply and drainage. Especially devices in the 'pumping' of loads mining driving skills called.

Prehistory
Art is originally a cult phenomenon, which developed simultaneously or in connection with prehistoric cults or religions. Both painting and sculpture as well as music and dance occur already in the Paleolithic in appearance. Among the earliest evidence of art include the nearly 40,000 year old ivory figures from the Lone Valley, the flutes of the Geißenklösterle or the cave paintings from Chauvet cave. Historically developed in the arts from their substantive contribution to the organization of cults and rituals. In the early days of human development is the appearance of a human art of several indicators for the formation of consciousness and thought. Art in this context means an operation or representations (such as music, painting), which can detect no direct benefit to sustain life.

In today's primitive peoples can be an early feature of worship artistic expression study as well as an anthropological constant: the need (it) to decorate, which has emerged in the first ornament. Also discussed are sociological functions of artistically designed and ornamental artifacts such as bracelets, brooches, weapons, etc. in the clan societies of prehistory and early history. Therefore, art acts since early times as Distinktionsmerkmal, as discussed by recent art theory and sociology. Anthropological art production marked before about 40,000 years ago (Aurignacian) the transition from Homo sapiens to Homo sapiens intellect. Since history is by definition an era without writing, there are no traditions of a contemporary concept of art.
Antiquity
From the early to the late ancient cultures, from the Egyptian Old Kingdom of ancient Greece until late in Rome, a wealth of art works have survived: architecture, sculptures, frescoes and cabaret. That they are designated as such, however, is an anachronism, since the time of its creation, painting and sculpture were not as art but as a craft, its products as the products of craftsmen, not artists. The theater was already highly developed and respected, but more part of religious ceremonies.

As a liberal arts college (liberal arts) in the ancient knowledge and skills that have been referred to a free man - should be available - but not a slave. Martianus Capella (c. 400 BC) was divided into two groups of seven arts: the trivium involved grammar, dialectic and rhetoric, which included Quadrivium geometry, arithmetic, astronomy and music. Of the fine arts in the modern sense, then, was the only music in the past a recognized art. In the Hellenistic period, however, were also medicine and architecture to the liberal arts counted. Craft were lower, however, the mechanical arts, which had to be done by hand, of which just the painting or the sculpture fell.

The antagonism of art produced primarily from the spirit and art that must be made manually will be manifested in the visual arts over 2,000 years, always different from the Paragons in the Renaissance (the battle of art forms, which the noblest of all may be) on the German idealism of the 18th Century, and its share of the modern concept of art (the technical skills only as mundane tool the artist conceives his idea to give expression) to the conceptual art of the sixties of the 20th Century, the artistic idea completely decoupled from the running object.
Middle Ages
Septem artes liberal (to 1180)

With the upheavals of the Migration Period, the ancient art of life in Europe as well as triggered on. The medieval concept of art does not assume the schema of the artes mechanicae as the liberal arts, liberal arts of the (philosophical) basic studies that were provided in the three major faculties of theology, law and medicine.

The visual artist is still organized in guilds and artisans, like all other professions. As an individual he rarely occurs in appearance, the signature of a work is unusual. Clients for almost all artistic productions - painting, sculpture, music, theater - is the Church. To a lesser extent to the feudal nobility can also provide contract work. It caused secular and sacred forms of expression, image types, and other forms of music.

Represented in antiquity nor a naturalistic view of man and tried to imitate nature as closely as possible, so is beauty defined in the Middle Ages with the spiritual (religious) content of a representation of how he was recognized by the scholastics as a beauty of God in art should reflect.

Early Modern

The importance of visual art and the artist's work will change in the modern era with the transition to a bourgeois society are created where previously mostly on behalf of church and nobility works grows up with the educated art collector, a new type of recipient.

This process begins first with the early Renaissance in Italy and settles in the middle of the 15th Century all over Europe continued. The cities and strengthened them with the merchants, who demonstrate their new position in the feudal society with art. The artist is emancipated, discovers itself as subject, and creates works whose main purpose is no longer the idea of ??a religious content or the power of a prince, but the expert debate on the design, execution and mastery, and becomes a professional artist. So high, complex iconographic image and architecture programs that solve a task for the art audience. The result is a new literary genre: ekphrasis, art literature, writing about artists and art, and discussion ("art appreciation") as part of the artistic intention. The now independent artist reflects on his role, which is in the visual arts in the Paragons made public.

The "rebirth", which is addressed in the term Renaissance refers to the renewed link with the classical antiquity, based on the concept of man and nature to art production. In music and literature flourish secular works. The Reformation accelerated the weakening of the Roman Catholic Church as the most important artists of the client, which is answered at the Council of Trent with a detailed counter-concept. The need for a Catholic Counter Reformation lays the groundwork for the explosion of artistic production in music and visual arts in the Baroque.

In the second half of the 18th and at the beginning of the 19th Century, the Enlightenment, the educated classes began painting, sculpture and architecture, literature and music as well as to discuss art in the modern sense of the word. Topics combine the aesthetics as opposed to ugly to qualify as a category was justified by works of art. Became an ideal for freedom of politics, science, and for gradually as discrete areas emerging literature and art. The craft aspect of artistic creation became less important. With German idealism, the idea was on the artifact. One of the most important preconditions for this process was the beginning of the Industrial Revolution accelerated secularization.

The distinction between literature and art was the result of the recently launched literary discussion, which dealt not with all the mental work, but novels, plays and poems as literature in a changed sense of the word summed up. In an effort to appeal to a wider audience, the term art was initially narrowed to paintings and sculptures, on items in the newspapers and magazines - the magazines, which since the early 18th Century were introduced and were assessed. There was a widespread review system. The concepts of work, original and genius are expressions of individuality as an artist influenced by Kant. One difference between inner and outer frames. Internal images were as language, ideas and the ideas, however, external fixtures, structures or handcrafted products.

The freedom of thought under the creative artist is no longer required a client, but independently produced art for an emerging market. In order to convert to one of the topics that include rather than religious and mythological subjects, portraits and allegorical now as well as accounts from the working world of the emerging industrial capitalism. Second, develop individual styles, not least as a trademark, used in modern parlance as a marketing tool of the competing artists. Even composers like Mozart goodbye from fixed positions in secular or ecclesiastical prince. This new freedom is associated with corresponding risks, the romantic image of the impoverished artist, combined with the concept of genius are the consequences.

Modern
Fine Art: Paul Cézanne: Self-Portrait (1898-1900)

The Enlightenment prepared the concept of modern art. Emancipated itself from the late Middle Ages to the autonomous subject, the artist, so emancipated at the end of feudalism, the Baroque work of art itself and became autonomous. In the age of machines, division of labor and automation, the status of craft activities changed in the art. Art does not exist anymore in functional contexts, but only out of itself, will be L'art pour l'art. The remaining functional relationships in art forms are constituted under the new umbrella term for the applied arts applied arts.

While later in the style of the epoch customer names attached to the respective art works were now dominate the artists in the interaction with the newly arrived art criticism itself their categories. The numerous, sometimes resulting in parallel-isms are now rather brief terms as an epoch-style concepts.

With the advent of modernity begins at the same time, the antagonism of counter-modernity. Goods to the Enlightenment, the addressees for art, only a very small circle (the clergy, the nobility, the wealthy bourgeoisie), so the audience expanded with the development of freely accessible art market, which organized to promote it public exhibitions (Salons) and in the press opened debates about art, literature, etc. of the installed mass considerably. At the same time the artistic dialogue focused both in visual arts such as music or literature, more and more on the investigation of their own origins. To the extent in which the art itself thematized (meta-art), it lost the interest of broad layers, where they really wanted to go ahead as avant-garde.

Were earlier conflicts over art-house and for example, were patriotic nature (Florentine Disegno versus Venetian Colore) or a matter of taste (Rubenisten contra Poussinists, dispute the Anciens et Modernes, etc.) refuse, so now all parts of society the art of their time, the acceptance . It develops a counter-modernity, their forms of expression in a variety of modern art opposing styles - for example by neo-classical, or other historicist deliberately anachronistic oriented art. This can be understood as a protest against the principles of modern and contemporary art.

About this protest went far beyond the defamation of modern art the Nazis, who tried to meet with the slogan, the Degenerate Art Classical to Modern as a whole: by prohibitions sneering presentations to physical destruction. Were from November 1936 to all departments and to the art of the early 20th Century in the German museums resolved. Originated in the Soviet Union in the 1920s, the wins still perceived as a revolutionary avant-garde Constructivism and Suprematism, the beginning of the anti-Stalinism of the modern reflex of hand and leads to the Socialist realism in literature, visual arts and music.

This violent, the state caused by suppression of modern varieties of art is not with the dissatisfaction of some populations on contemporary forms of artistic expression (especially in architecture) to be equated. The juxtaposition of different styles is now widely accepted and provides a great artistic range in today's global culture.
Postmodernism

The postmodern view of art is in part the ideas of freedom, originality and authenticity into question again is, consciously quotes from other artists and links historical and contemporary styles, materials and methods and different art forms together. Art and exhibition venues are operating from a meta-level of questioning (White Cube). The boundaries between design, pop culture and subcultures on the one hand and high culture are blurred on the other.

Contemporary art, contemporary art and collecting similar terms grasp's contemporary art only in very general terms. The concept of artistic avant-garde is outdated for the emerging since the beginning of the post-modern art, as there may be in open societies and cultures no general direction of a vanguard or a pioneer. Therefore, the term "contemporary art" is also used to paraphrase for artistic works or actions that make the present something so noticeable that they appear culturally significant in the future. In this sense, free contemporary art and seemingly ignores all conditions, academic rules and classifications that all art styles, art forms and cultural boundaries, while at the same time takes the liberty to them, depending on artistic need to reflect, edit and use.

Such a system represents art art, [3] which has evolved similar to the system science in the course of industrialization. Contemporary Art as a global and intercultural working system combines the origins in different cultures, art history, the theoretical foundation of art, with the Western art tradition of ancient philosophy as a historical basis is especially important. Contemporary art is also conventional classifications, such as shine through painting, sculpture, dance, music, theater, etc., is distinguished precisely by their theming however, questioning of, conquest, expansion, integration and interdisciplinary irony. Today, in addition to photography and performance art and theater, while the media arts situate themselves anyway as there is always media-friendly and relevant.

Just like in science is opening up a comprehensive understanding of the possible meanings of works and often works only through in-depth study of the artistic object. It is interpreted in different contexts, depending on the viewer and reader, according to the audience and transform implicated in the events, and depending on the interests of the critics and other professional intermediaries and different. In art theory, the contemporary concept of art is being discussed intensively. She represents both the artist, the recipient, the art market or the art work itself at the center of the investigation.

In the wake of globalization on the one hand, an increased dialogue between different art forms found throughout the world, rather than as art world, on the other hand were regional differences tend to be leveled, and as a reaction occurs, the term ethnic art.

With the question of which biological basis, the artistic needs of the people has, or has the psychological, sociological, economic and political functions of art for the people and the society to occupy the biology, sociology of art, psychology, law and cultural studies in general.
Biology
A picture of the chimpanzee Congo

The rapid development of life sciences has led to higher cognitive functions of humans in the biological sciences are studied. This also the artistic design and the need for aesthetic sensations are not exempt. Biological studies with particular reference to the art find place in evolutionary theory and neuroscience.

In evolutionary biology, behavior is usually explained by a selective advantage. Concretely, this means that art and kunstbetreibende underestimated people would have more offspring than the others. Such explanations seem in relation to art is not immediately apparent. Nevertheless, art forms found in all historical periods and cultural areas, which indicates that a given biological and art need not only a result of social character is. For biological anchoring of art need to be offered several explanations. Most likely is the art as a selection criterion for choosing a partner. Human evolution is characterized by an increase in brain volume and thus influenced the cognitive abilities. Art is the ability to produce a recognizable reference to the outside of a creative mind can come in other problem areas to creative solutions. Artists are recommended by their art thus to be particularly intelligent sex partners. In addition, people who had time for art, no problems, the daily needs for food and security to herself: Who is next to the everyday still reserves for primary meaningless activities like art does, so its survival dar. Man as a social being has many mechanisms designed to strengthen its social communities. Art, too, can support as a donor group-specific traditions and values ??of human communities.

Another hypothesis assumes that the arts need a by-product (epiphenomenon) of the development of other-than-life-relevant, cognitive performance is. The advantages of these cognitive abilities must therefore have the disadvantages of art need (time, materials) exceed.

-> Site for Anne Windfohr Marion

A confirmation of sociobiological theories by experimentation is not feasible, since breeding experiments with humans are not ethical. The theories must therefore remain speculative. In particular, the definition of art as a product of cultural evolution need is difficult.

Another aspect of the biology of the need for art based on the neurosciences. A maximum of grossly viable project is the assignment of neuronal processes of artistic creation. Although various cognitive processes are active at different neural areas, however, is not a fixed assignment: Neural activity is generally distributed among different brain regions are also the same regions with very different cognitive abilities active. Then there is the enormous heterogeneity of artistic activity. It means that at best can individual artistic achievements correlate with neuronal processes.
Psychology

Sigmund Freud saw in art - as in any creative activity - a way to drive the libido to non-sexual way to sublimate.
The concept of art in a comprehensive meaning

There are the fine arts, but also the medical and engineering, the art of speech, or of diplomacy, the dribbler, and on many areas of the artist in his field. What is in this broad meaning of art together - and then what the artist is different in each subject from each other? Art in this very broad sense, is a creative activity (and profit) that is exercised with the utmost efficiency, that will be measured against the means employed, the results achieved with maximum impact. With a comparable effect does not experience the higher, but the relatively more moderate effort, the higher esteem than art. That does not mean that the facilities would only be simple and modest, or that it is always easy for the artist to reach the simplest solution to one problem or the most effective means of expression. The various forms of art but differ in the type of effect, and this depends on the subject. The goal of engineering is for example The elegant bridge, the essential thing about the essay insightful analysis, the focus is primarily in the fine arts of emotional awakening and stimulating experiences. Medically, the arts, if they find more effective ways to maintain health or to restore it, and with less effort than with conventional methods. You can practice many activities as art in the broadest sense. The criteria are creativity and efficiency.

Legal status

Art is a phenomenon in every culture, the subject of social conventions and - if a society develops a legal system - an object of the legislation. In democratic countries the right to artistic freedom is anchored in either the Constitution or in the context of freedom of expression guarantees. In many states, the artistic expression is regulated and / or exploited for propaganda purposes. In dictatorships, art is often used specifically to stabilize the respective regimes. Free artistic expression is subjected to censorship and repression. Some of the political, social or religious requirements are internalized to the extent that the artist produces works on his own affirmative (scissors in the head).

Were fakes, imitations, and strongly influenced by other artists and works are found in every phase of art history. If the producer hides his role models, this is also an art forgery punishable as a violation of copyright. To make such a tangible injury law, will be introduced by legislation criteria, which play no role in the art world itself. Thus, from the perspective of copyright, an artist described the work as his own property only if it has reached a level of creation. This implies a personal, individual and spiritual (human) creation, which one has the sense of human-perceivable form (see the definition of a work of copyright regarding the level of creation).

An art museum is a public or private museum where works of art by various artists will be collected, archived and displayed. An art museum is concerned only with the oeuvre of a single artist or a single artist, is spoken by an art museum. An art museum that collects only paintings and exhibits, is also known as an art gallery or art gallery. In Gallery but is understood at the present time a sales space for art objects. A gallery is thus unlike an art museum to the sale of the works shown in public or private collectors. Many state art museums conduct art historical research and seek the restoration of works of art.

In the Middle Ages collected valuable liturgical and ecclesiastical institutions of art. The collected objects are the basis for today's museums dar. cathedral since the 14th Century put on European royal houses art collections. Collected in the Medici in Florence, next to ancient art and contemporary art created with their acquisitions and the current core of the Uffizi. Emperor Rudolf II (HRR) was in Prague as a major art collector and patron in appearance. His art collection is legendary and was the largest of its time. After the sacking of Prague in 1648 they were scattered around the globe. A part of this art collection now forms the basis of Brueghelsammlung the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. As an absolutist ruler founded Tsarina Catherine II (Russia) in St. Petersburg in 1764, the Hermitage. The church led by Napoleon Bonaparte secularization possessions brought the art museums (Louvre, for example) an increase in art objects. With the rise of the bourgeoisie in the 19th Century created urban art collections (eg, Metropolitan Museum, Hamburger Kunsthalle). Since then, there were mainly wealthy individuals who contributed through donations, foundation or discount their private collections to create new public art museums (eg, Stadel, Museum Ludwig).
